FIFO Workers' Guide to Dental Treatment in Vietnam: Costs, Quality and Everything You Need to Know

Eco lodge north of Hanoi Vietnam

If you're working FIFO in Australia, chances are you know someone who's spent their time off in Bali, Thailand or somewhere else in Southeast Asia.

Travelling overseas between swings is nothing new. But what about using some of that time to get dental work done?

For anyone facing a large dental bill, or who's been thinking about improving their teeth for years, Vietnam could be worth looking into.

Hanoi has modern private dental clinics offering everything from crowns and veneers to dental implants and full mouth restorations, often at considerably lower prices than those quoted in Australia.

And with FIFO rosters such as 2:1, 2:2 and 8:6, there's an opportunity to plan treatment around your time off. Add some annual leave and you could potentially have several weeks available.

Of course, travelling overseas for dental treatment raises a few questions. How much could you save? Are the clinics any good? How long does treatment take? And what happens if something goes wrong once you're back in Australia?

These are exactly the things worth understanding before making a decision.

Why Consider Dental Treatment in Vietnam?

For many people, cost is what first gets them looking overseas.

You might have been quoted thousands for an implant or crown. Perhaps you need extensive dental work and the total cost is difficult to justify.

Or maybe it's something more personal.

You might have had missing, worn or discoloured teeth for years. You've thought about fixing them, but between work, everyday expenses and everything else, it keeps getting pushed back.

There's a difference between needing dental treatment and wanting to feel better about your smile. Both are perfectly valid reasons to explore your options.

For some people, finally getting their teeth sorted can make a real difference to how comfortable they feel smiling, meeting people or having their photo taken.

And if you're working long swings away from home, putting some of that money towards something you've wanted for years might be worth considering.

Vietnam isn't automatically the right choice for everyone, but the potential difference in cost makes it an option worth researching.

How Much Could You Save?

Dental treatment costs vary considerably depending on the dentist, the materials used and the complexity of the work.

But for major procedures, the difference between Australian and Vietnamese treatment prices can be substantial.

Here are some indicative costs, shown in Australian dollars.

TreatmentAustralia (AUD)Hanoi (AUD)Single dental implant with crown$4,500 to $6,500$1,450 to $2,010All on 4, one jaw$23,000 to $45,000$8,840 to $11,250Full mouth implant restoration, both jaws$46,000 to $90,000$17,680 to $21,700Dental crown$1,200 to $2,500$320 to $420

These figures are indicative only. Australian prices are based on published private dental pricing guides, while Hanoi prices are approximate AUD conversions of clinic estimates available to Hanoi Dental Concierge. Treatment inclusions, materials and complexity can vary, so these are not necessarily equivalent quotations.

You'll also need to allow for flights, accommodation, meals and potentially a second visit.

But if you're facing a bill of $30,000 or more, it's easy to understand why people start investigating overseas options.

The important thing is to compare proper written treatment plans rather than choosing a clinic based on price alone.

But What About the Quality?

This is probably the biggest concern people have about getting dental work done overseas, and understandably so.

A cheaper price means very little if the treatment isn't done properly.

One thing that surprised me when I first visited Hanoi for dental treatment around eight years ago was the standard of the private clinics I experienced.

I returned for further treatment in 2026 and spent time visiting clinics, meeting staff and learning more about how they work with international patients.

The dental clinics I've personally visited in Hanoi have impressed me with their modern facilities and technology, including digital imaging, 3D scanning and advanced treatment planning.

They also offer internationally recognised dental implant systems, including brands such as Straumann and Neodent.

Having received dental treatment in Hanoi myself, I've seen firsthand how much these clinics have invested in their facilities.

Of course, modern equipment is only part of the picture. The experience of the dentist, treatment planning, infection control and aftercare arrangements are just as important.

That's why I think it's worth understanding who will actually be treating you, what materials they're using and what happens if you need help after returning home.

Those are questions worth asking before paying a deposit or booking flights.

Making It Work Around Your FIFO Roster

One of the practical advantages of FIFO is having blocks of time off.

Whether you're working a 2:1, 2:2, 8:6 or another roster, you may be able to arrange dental treatment around your breaks.

Some workers might even combine their time off with annual leave, giving themselves three or four weeks to travel and recover.

That can make planning major treatment easier, although the timeframe depends on what you're having done.

Crowns and veneers may be completed during a single visit, depending on the condition of your teeth and the amount of work required.

Dental implants are different. They often require several months of healing before the final crown can be fitted.

More extensive procedures, such as All on 4 or full mouth implant restorations, may involve temporary teeth during the first visit and a return trip several months later.

So while you might have three weeks available, that doesn't necessarily mean the entire treatment can be completed in three weeks.

It's also worth remembering that returning to a remote mine site after dental surgery is different from returning to an office job.

You need to consider recovery, physical work, medication and access to dental care if complications develop.

A proper treatment plan should give you a realistic idea of how much time you'll need, including when your dentist considers it safe to return to work.

What Happens When You Get Back to Australia?

This is one area I would encourage anyone considering overseas dental treatment to think carefully about.

What happens if a crown needs adjusting? What if you experience discomfort or have a problem with an implant?

If you're working remotely, arranging an appointment can be difficult enough without having your original dentist in another country.

Before proceeding, it's worth understanding the clinic's warranty, what it covers and how they handle problems for international patients.

For implant treatment, the brand and components used are also important. Some systems are more widely supported than others, which can affect your options for maintenance or repairs in Australia.

You should also consider speaking with a local dentist before travelling, particularly if you're planning extensive treatment.

And don't assume travel insurance will cover planned dental treatment or complications arising from it.

None of this necessarily means overseas treatment is a bad idea. It simply means understanding the risks and having a plan before you go.

Too Many Clinics, Too Many Quotes. Where Do You Start?

One thing I've noticed since starting Hanoi Dental Concierge is how confusing the process can become for people researching dental treatment overseas.

You might have contacted several clinics and received completely different quotations.

One clinic recommends four implants, another suggests six. Prices vary considerably, treatment timelines are different and every clinic seems to have its own recommendations.

Or perhaps you haven't contacted anyone yet because you simply don't know which clinic to trust.

It's understandable. Most people aren't familiar with dental implant systems, crown materials or the different treatment options available.

And when you're potentially spending thousands of dollars and travelling to another country, you want to feel confident about your decision.

That's one of the main reasons I started Hanoi Dental Concierge.

Having experienced dental treatment in Hanoi myself and spent time visiting clinics, I wanted to make the process easier for other people.

We help you connect with clinics we've visited, obtain an initial estimate and understand the practical differences between treatment proposals, including costs, materials, timelines and questions to ask.

We're not dentists, so we don't decide which clinical treatment is best for you. That's something the treating dentist needs to explain.

But we can help you make sense of the process, understand what you're being quoted for and know what questions to ask before committing.

The idea is simple. Less confusion, clearer information and someone familiar with Hanoi to help you through the process.

Train street Hanoi, well worth the visit while in Hanoi.

How Hanoi Dental Concierge Can Help

If you're considering treatment, the first step is simply to get in touch and explain what you're looking to have done.

If you already have a treatment plan, X rays or dental records, these may help a clinic prepare an initial estimate.

We can help arrange an estimate from a Hanoi clinic and talk through the practical aspects, including likely treatment stages, how long you may need in Vietnam and how that could fit around your FIFO roster.

The clinic is responsible for all clinical assessments, recommendations and treatment. HDC doesn't provide dental advice or guarantee treatment outcomes.

There's no HDC patient facilitation fee for arranging an initial clinic estimate. If you decide you want additional support, we'll explain the available services and any applicable fee before you commit.

You remain in control of your decisions and pay the dental clinic directly for treatment.

Is Vietnam Worth Considering?

If you're working FIFO and have been putting off major dental treatment, Vietnam might be worth a closer look.

Maybe you've received an expensive quotation in Australia. Maybe you've wanted to improve your smile for years. Or perhaps you're simply curious about what treatment overseas might cost.

Whatever your situation, it doesn't hurt to understand your options.

The potential savings can be considerable, but the quality of the clinic, suitability of the treatment, travel arrangements and aftercare are just as important.

Getting a clear estimate and understanding the process is a sensible place to start.
