Why is dental treatment so much cheaper in Vietnam? (And is it safe?)
When people first hear how much they could save on dental treatment in Vietnam, the reaction is usually the same.
"There has to be a catch."
It's a fair question.
If something costs significantly less than it does in New Zealand, it's natural to wonder whether the quality is lower, whether cheaper materials are being used, or whether corners are being cut.
The reality is more interesting than that.
While every clinic is different, the price difference is often explained by lower operating costs, more efficient clinic design, and a different way of delivering dental care.
Let's take a closer look.
Lower business costs
The first reason is simple economics.
Like many countries in Southeast Asia, Vietnam has lower commercial rents, lower wages, and lower day to day operating costs than New Zealand.
Running a dental clinic simply costs less.
Those savings allow many clinics to offer treatment at a lower price while still investing in modern technology, experienced dentists, and quality materials.
Everything under one roof
One of the biggest differences I discovered while researching dental clinics in Vietnam was how many larger clinics bring everything together in one place.
It is common to find specialist dentists, 3D CBCT scanners, digital imaging, treatment coordinators, and dental laboratories all working within the same building.
Rather than sending patients between different providers, much of the treatment process happens in one location.
For international patients, this can make treatment more efficient and reduce unnecessary delays.
In house dental laboratories
Many larger clinics also have their own dental laboratory on site.
Instead of sending crowns, veneers, bridges, or dentures to an external laboratory, technicians can often design, manufacture, and adjust restorations within the clinic.
This allows dentists and technicians to work closely together throughout the treatment process.
If adjustments are needed, they can often be made much more quickly than if work has to be sent away and returned days later.
Many New Zealand dental practices work with excellent external laboratories, but having an in house laboratory can make treatment faster and more efficient.
What about the quality?
This is probably the biggest concern for most people.
Many reputable dental clinics in Vietnam use internationally recognised implant systems, crown materials, and restorative products that are also used throughout New Zealand, Australia, Europe, and North America.
Many larger clinics also invest heavily in modern imaging technology, digital scanners, and ongoing professional development.
Some clinics even have dedicated international patient teams who work with overseas visitors every day.
Of course, not every clinic is the same.
Just like New Zealand, there are excellent clinics, average clinics, and clinics you may choose to avoid.
That is why choosing the right clinic is far more important than simply finding the lowest price.
Is it safe?
This is one of the most common questions people ask.
The answer depends on the clinic you choose.
Before making any decision, it is worth asking questions about the dentist's experience, the technology used, the materials recommended, infection control procedures, warranties, and how follow up care is managed.
A reputable clinic should be happy to answer those questions.
Is Vietnam the right choice for everyone?
Not necessarily, every persons circumstances are different.
Travelling overseas for dental treatment is not the right decision for every person.
Travel costs, time away from work, follow up appointments, and your individual dental needs all need to be considered.
For some people, receiving treatment in New Zealand will remain the best option.
For others, Vietnam may provide access to high quality dental care at a significantly lower overall cost.
Final thoughts
The lower cost of dental treatment in Vietnam is rarely explained by one single factor.
Lower operating costs, integrated clinics, in house dental laboratories, and different business models all contribute to the difference in price.
The important thing is not simply finding the cheapest treatment.
It is understanding your options, asking the right questions, and choosing a clinic you feel confident in.
